Don’t ask to send your test results directly; instead, send them to complete your application. Keep your original test safe and ready as they may ask for it later.

Types of English Language Test Conducted

You can apply for the following approved language tests:

CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program)

The CELPIP Tests are conducted to assess whether the applicant meets the standards of English Language proficiency standards of immigration, professional designation, and citizenship. This test allows applicants to prove their ability to perform in English.

CELPIP Test correctly and strictly evaluates a person’s English language skills in different everyday situations, such as dealing with colleagues and supervisors in the workplace, communicating with friends, grasping newscasts, and decoding written components’ responses.

1. CELPIP – General Test

This test allows assessing the applicant’s English speaking, listening, writing, and reading skills and is conducted for permanent professional designations and residence applications. The fee for the test taker already residing in Canada is $280 +tax.

The test requires approximately 3 hours to finish and can be done in a single sitting, having no separate speaking session. It is an IRCC approved test for permanent residency applications.

Listening Test: The applicant needs to listen to passages and answer the questions. It takes 47-55 mins.
Reading Test: The test taker has to read through the lines and answer the questions. It takes 55-60 mins.
Writing Test: The applicant needs to answer the questions in the written form. It can be done in 53-60 mins.
Speaking Test: The applicant must be replying to on-screen prompts verbally. It takes hardly 15-20 mins.

The CELPIP – General Test is conducted at over 70 places across Canada and internationally.

2. CELPIP – General LS Test

This test assesses an applicant’s English listening and speaking skills are conducted for professional designations and citizenship. It costs $195 +tax and is available only in Canada. The test takes approximately 1 hour and can be done in a single sitting, having no separate speaking session. ItIRCC approves it for Canadian citizenship applications.

You must take the CELPIP – General Test since the Government of Canada doesn’t accept the CELPIP – LS General Test.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

What is a good IELTS score for Canada? IELTS score depends on the needs of the visa and the organization you are willing to apply to. It evaluates your English language proficiency on a scale from 1-9 in the following four skills:

Listening
Reading
Speaking
Writing

There are two types of IELTS tests conducted:

General Training

The Listening and Speaking test criterion is the same for both kinds, whereas the subject matter for the Reading and Writing parts have a slight difference, depending on which test you take.

The Reading, Writing, and Listening sections of the tests can be done on the same day in a single sitting. Whereas, the Speaking section can be within a week – before or after the other three tests, depending on your test center.

The total time period of the entire test is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

You must take the IELTS – General Training since the Government of Canada doesn’t accept the IELTS Academic test.

Types of French Language Tests

You can take any of the following two approved language tests:

TEF Canada (Test d’évaluation de français)

TED is an international benchmark test that evaluates a person’s knowledge and skills in the French language.

You must take the following tests for the approval of your migration to Canada:

Oral Comprehension: containing 60 questions that must be done within 40 mins.
Written Comprehension: Consists of 50 questions, having a time limit of 60 mins.
Oral Expression: Includes 2 topics that must be covered within 15 mins.
Written Expression: Includes 2 topics to be covered within 60 mins.

You must take the following tests for the approval of your Canadian citizenship application:

Oral Comprehension: consists of 60 questions, having a time frame of 40 mins.
Oral Expression: includes 2 topics to be covered within 15 mins.

All these tests must be done in a single sitting for the certificate to be recognized by Canadian authorities.

TCF Canada (Test de connaissance du français)

This test allows toassessinghe French language skills and knowledge that are necessary to meet the standards of IRCC. TCF Canada results are accepted to get Canadian citizenship or for the motive of economic immigration.

You must take the following tests for the approval of your migration to Canada:

What to do Next?

Once you are done with tests, see what language level you have through the score you obtained in your test results, using:

Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB)

These test results will be used as evidence of your language skills. Your test results must be less than two years old when you complete your Express Entry profile and apply for permanent residence. Educational Assessment

An educational assessment is done through ECA (Educational Credential Assessment), verifying that your foreign certificate, degree, or diploma is valid and matches Canadian standards. There are various types of ECAs, but you’ll be needing the one for immigration purposes.

Don’t forget to mention your ECA report and the reference number in your Express Entry Profile. An ECA report helps to find a job, but it doesn’t guarantee:

You’ll get a job in your preferred field and level
You’ll be licensed to practice in a regulated job.

If you desire to work in a regulated job, you must obtain your license in the province or territory you wish to settle in.

Who needs ECA?

If you have completed your studies outside Canada, you will need an evaluation to:

Be eligible as the principal candidate for Federal Skilled Workers Program I,.e., Express Entry
Earn points for education you received outside Canada

From where to get your assessment done?

You must get your assessment done from any of the organizations or professional bodies designated by IRCC. They will provide you with a report that informs whether your education is equal to in Canada or not.

Why is your report critical?

Your report must indicate that foreign education is valid and equal to a completed Canadian high school or post-secondary education. If it does, you need to add the results and the reference number in your Express Entry profile.

If your report indicates that your education is not equal to a completed Canadian education or if your educational institution is not recognized, you won’t be eligible to meet the requirements of schooling under Federal Skilled Workers Programs, and you won’t get any point for it.

Method of submitting your report

Once you get your report in your hands, all you need to do is:

Enter the results and the reference number into your profile
Keep your original documents safe.
Be ready to upload copies if they invite you for the application for permanent residence.

What to do if you have more than one educational Credential

If you want to add more than one educational credential to your Express Entry, simply follow these steps:

Click on the “Study and languages” form in your profile
Fill all the fields you see in the “Education history” portion with your first credential (add your highest degree/diploma/certificate)
Click on “Save and add.”
Your saved credential will appear in the “Education History” table illustrated below the “Save and add” button. Repeat the process for each credential you want to add.
